Numbers matching?

Hey all. I'm a new tta owner and have a question concerning the sequence number on the engine block. I've been tearing the motor down, for a complete rebuild, and found the sequence number stamped on the back side of the block, just beneath the driver's side head. The last three digits end in 723, and the last three digits on the car's VIN tag end in 722. Every digit is right on except the last digit. This seems a little odd to me, so I'm wondering if anyone has noticed this on their car?

The cars where never ment to have a sequence number and nothing matches as everything got mixed up when installed. You have the engine, trans, IC all with different sequence numbers....

Thank you for your response. I looked in my 20th anniversary service manual supplement and it shows the last six digits of the VIN to be the sequential numbers. I believe these to be the ones that PHS uses to find your particular car number.....although I'm not real certain. I also looked at my transmission and it has the same sequence number as the engine block. I just thought that cars that have the matching numbers tend to be more valuable to collectors. The car has less than 19,000 miles and after tearing the motor down, I'm not sure it hadn't been done before. All the connecting rods and caps had the cylinder number stamped on the side. I'm not sure that they would do that at the factory. I guess it's not that big of a deal but it might clue me in on what was done to the car before me. Thank you again for your response. It sure is nice to know that there's such a large source of information out there!

Glad I could help. And yes PHS and other sources do use the VIN sequense number to determine our build number. Mine is 1078.

I still have to look at the engine and trans numbers to see what the sequence number are, would be cool if they all matched (including the IC #).

Sounds like your engine might have been apart previously, I know for sure mine been apart at least once.

I'm in need of detailing the engine bay so at some point if will probabrly remove the complete engine and everything else in there but that will have to wait as I just got my TTA back from the body shop after a complete paint work, so still putting everything back together. Just picked up a new headliner here in the US (I'm in Miami at the moment) that I will bring back to the UK tonight when I leave.

You can find a lot of pictures of my restoration project here if interested:

WOW!!!! Now that's an A++++ job your doing there. I'm curious, is that the original finish for the hood braces and the hood latch? Mine was repainted at some point, but not sure of the original finish? I like the look, was it expensive to have done?

Thanks it's coming together nicly.

No the hinges etc I had stripped and zinc plated before they were painted just to make sure they are prepped as good as possible. Originaly they just had the white paint and no plating. This way they will never rust and the primer got something to "bite" into.
