So i bought my first TTA and i would like to see how to decode the vin or find out which production# it is. It's got the pace car letternig on the doors still, and it says 36 on the rear bumper behind the license plate written with black marker pen. I was told this is the build # ?. The Vin # is 1G5FW2175KL225751. The previous owner said it was originally sold in Illinois and it was at the indy race. the car is real clean with only 70k miles, original paint, it's never been wrecked and it has t-tops with cloth interior, i was told the interior was a rare deal? I own several Turbo Buicks but i know nothing about the special options or special info about these cars.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dominic welcome! Looks like you have a festival car there. The number behind the tag I thought was in red crayon but anything is possible. That would be the number of the car. Go to this site http://www.phs-online.com/ and you can order a vin kit for your car. It will confirm the car number and should tell you if it was a festival car or not. Tell us where you are calling in from and lets get some pics of that baby on here for us to see! :)

Not sure where Fairfield is, I moved to Arizona from the South Bay of the Los Angeles area a few years ago.

The number written behind the license plate I thought was the number of the car when used at Indy and not the build number at least that's what I been told.
 
Hello, did you ever find your build number yet? I just picked up a TTA and was told that the number is on a blue tab on the transmission much like a rearend tab. It was there on mine. There should be 4 sets of numbers and or letters the last set should be the number. Thats what I was told anyways. If anyone else knows if this is true or can check to verify please let me know. Thanks!

The transmission tag isn't the correct number. It's believed that the transmissions were kind of just sitting all in a group and numbered but weren't actually put into the cars in order. Your trans tag will not show you your car number. No one has been able to find out their car number from anything on their car yet as far as I know.
 
To get your car number, you have to order a package from Pontiac Historical Services, or PHS.
All these numbers on the car (intercooler, tranny, etc.), are just sequence numbers for those peices.
Nothing beats getting a letter from PHS with your vin and car build number!

Welcome to the site and to owning a great car. I live down the road from you in Roseville, Ca. You have a Festival Car. It was used at Indy during the month of May in 1989.

My car's is TTA # 90 and the Indy Festival number was 130. Check out my club's web site in Sacramento at www.transamclub.com.

PHS can tell you the TTA build number and were it was delivered. Did you get any paperwork with the car? I found out how my car was used at Indy and verified it's Indy number by a guy named Howard. Unfortunately I do not have Howards email address anymore. Jan Larsson, who replied to this thread might have his full name and email.

Hey Ron,
I remember that you told me that my car was not number 231. (Then again, at my advanced age, maybe I am dreaming all this).
Yet, PHS and Pontiac told me that my car is.
Have you found any other cars like this?

I have not contacted Pontiac historical services yet but i will in the near future. Thank's for the info and link Dave, i will be sure to check out your website.
