Odometer Gear/motor Recommendations?

Today I install a mini starter in #1001 and new battery to get in running. Still need to get a TT chip especially after discovering the ECM is not communicating the ALDL and car won't go into diagnostic mode.

Anyway, I took #1001 after getting it running for a quick drive around the corner and notice the odometer didn't move. So I did it it again to verify my suspicions. I removed the instrument panel cluster and odometer gauge and found out the gear was broken as well as the motor was not working.

What do you all recommend to do?
 
Not such a big problem really ... get a spare cluster (from any 85-92 Firebird/Formula/TA/GTA) and just swap parts over ... I had to take mine apart as the small motor died on it so just grabbed one from one of my spare clusters and replaced it ...
 
Understood however what about when the gear that the motor gear contacts breaks. how can you replace that gear?
 
I would need to look at one I have sitting around in bits to see what can be done with that gear.

Other option you have is to replace the complete setup ... you can take the "roller" bit with the mileage out easily and set your original mileage on the replacement unit ...

Anyway let me have a look at one and I'll let you know what your best option would be
 
I see it seems like it just sitting in there ( the mileage roll), but looks as if you have to bend the tabs to get it out I'm assuming?
 
Yes the small tabs if you bend them carefully just enough to lift the milage role out then reverse the install you are good just make sure you look at how it all fits together befere you pull it out.

I've attached photos GREEN arrows are the tabs for removing the rolls; the red arrowas are the gear you refer too I beleive.

The gear (both of them down there actually) can't be replaced as the shaft is permanently fixed to the sheetmetal bracket so only way is to find a donor to use ... OR you use a dremel to cut off the shaft and see if you can use a small bolt / nut of some sort to put it all back together (with a new gear) but not sure if that will work as I've not tried it.

I would get a spare or two then swap them over. That's what I did back in 2005 when my motor went out and still good; the lower mileage replacement you can find the better.
