changed my oil today and 5 quarts and a new filter record 1.5 qts low on a factory car, so i called my friend who runs a pontiac service department and has a very low mileage tta and he sent me a pontiac spec sheet showing 6.4 qts with filter change. also the supplement guide supplied with the vehicle says 5 qts of oil with or without filter change. then says check and adjust accordingly to maintain according to dipstick levels. so all those with a car showing 1 qt low thats why.

This info is timely. Up until now I've been having other people change my oil. About two weeks ago I undertook replacing the timing cover, so had to drain the oil and coolant. I'm just about ready to button up the car today. Up until I read your note this morning, I was under the impression that the car took only 5 quarts.

Advance Auto Parts has been running a pretty good deal on 5 quarts of Mobil 1 oil plus a Mobil 1 filter for about a month now. When I was in Michigan this past summer, the same deal was available from Murray's auto. I bought several of these deals - so am stocked up pretty well.
 
well its definitly a desputable subject because some say 5 qts and they are full and others say the are a quart or so low with five, so use your own judment . goodluck to ya
 
As long as your in the hash marks on the stick your fine. I know some guys run their oil at the very start of the hash marks they say the car leaks less! :) I use 5 plus an additive like red stp (thanks Jason for that tip ;) ) so it gets me about where I like to be.
 
I always "sneak up" on adding the last quart or two anyway. So it really doesn't matter to me whether it is 5 or 6. My mini-van 3.4L V6 (of course it's different) takes 4.5.

Recall that I wasn't just doing a normal oil change. I replaced the timing cover so more oil than usual was needed. Tonight I put 6 in the TTA, and when the oil cooler and oil filter (AC 1218) filled up, it was on the mark.

I LIKED that tip about putting in less oil to make it leak slower...!
