Oil Leaks Thru Valve Cover Acorn Nut Under Boost

It has been leaking oil thru center acorn nut-washer on driver side valve cover. At 15 or 20 lbs of boost is when it comes thru a little.

It did not take a rocket engineer to figure this one out.

I removed the acorn nut and the washer, and replaced with NOS nut and washer.

As noted in the pic. the Nos washer is much thicker than the one that was on the car, this causing the acorn nut to not tighten up. It was loose with the old washer even when torqued properly at 13ft. lbs.

After installing the Nos nut and washer it is tight now with no leaks.

The Nos one is the left one in the pic. Much thicker than the other one.
All the rest of the valve cover nuts are tight on the car, so this is the only one that was like that.

Nice work solving the oil leak. I am going to see how thick my washers are? I can tell you I never would have thought about washer thickness. Thanks.

Interesting, did you check your other washers if they were all that thin or a mix of both?

I never seen any that thin I must say ... might be one reason some people managed to crack their VCs when tightening the acorn nuts ..

Good info for all of us, I have to check my stash of spare washers next time I'm in my spare parts department :-)

I am going to check each one as soon as this tropical storm is over down here. IKES!!!

Jan, I found another thin washer on the pass. side rear. All of the others had the thick washers.
So 2 out of the 6 washers were thin.
I went ahead and replaced all of them with new correct washers and new acorn nuts. Got it sorted now!!!
