Pictures of Blown Headgaskets

I stopped by the shop today and picked up my 2 souvenir blown headgaskets. The worst one is on the passanger side. Replaced with felpro gaskets and arp headbolts. The stock bolts that were on there were stretched, especially the ones in the center. Best of all no piston damage.

Looks like one may be a stock gasket and the other is a Felpro. Someone may have got lazy and just changed one side at somepoint.

I would have to agree with you, but the motor was taken out of the car and they discovered it has a rebuild, maybe less than 20k ago. My mechanic said the motor was in good shape and said who ever rebuilt it knew what they were doing.

As far as the headgaskets go, they both look the same brand up close. It was put together with stock headbolts and probably not torqued right. It appears tha t the heads lifted up in the center.

He also said it was the first time he ever saw 2 bad headgaskets on one of these engines.

I might add, one of the headgaskets may have already been partly blown when I got the car over 1 year ago. And when I got the car it has low boost, so I changed that, and with the higher boost it created problems for the heads.

Really?? I've seen it on mine once and Kevin's GN once and we've only been into this a few years....I must be one of the lucky ones I guess. LOL

And yes, that happens. I have a quite a few pairs of blown to near perfect HGs and you can see how the anatomy of a blowout looks. Like first the fire ring takes some hammering then ,combustion starts to eat away at the composite material till the steel inner core gets exposed and then it's just a matter of a couple degrees of KR and your filling up the oil pan and muffler with coolant.

I'm embarrassed to say that I have this knowledge because the learning curve is steep....and expensive.
