Rear ending compatibility?

My question is: will a rear ending from an 1997 WS-6 trans am- fit with proper mounting and fastening locations into an 1989 WS-6 trans am?

I think it will bolt up but the width from wheel hub to wheel hub is different than that of a 3rd gen rear end. I am not sure though.

Thanks for the input, have a chance to get a low mileage 10bolt w/342 gears for $200

This is correct from all that I have read.

It should fit, but I believe the wheels will be out on each side about an inch more.
