Rear Main Seal

BOBTTA#464

Well-Known Member
After looking at all my documentation of repairs from day one, I noticed that the rear main seal was replaced twice. Is there an issue with these seals on these cars?
It only has 29,000 miles.

Just curious
Thanks

Yep, mine drips a little. Gotta catch pan under it-not gonna bother fixing it just for the reason that the car sits more than it gets driven. So it would probably start to leak again if it was repaired.

So, This is my Mid Life (52) version of an old Harley? Drip pans.......

Kidding, Thanks kymmee!

The good ole rope seal that was used originally. Dripping anywhere bugs me, so I've done my GN, my first TTA twice, and now my current one. Use the rubber fel-pro rear seal, but with the extra thick cork pan gasket the vendors sell..Don't use the rubber pan gaskets as then your pan will leak after some use. I think the last few thick corks I got from Cottons Perf.

When I first got my TTA 3 years ago , it had 15,480 , and knew it had a oil leak banking on it being the rear main seal. When I got the car ,put it up on the lift to do the rear main(bought the rubber fel-pro and the Kirban cork gasket).Once I started the task ,upon inspecting closely I could see the rear main has been done and is clean as a whistle behind the cap.
The culprit was some fool used a rubber oil pan gasket and crushed the death out of it.I opted to just do the pan gasket fearing I'd might make the rear main worse if not done right(I have done them before).
New gasket on lightly snugged 1/4 ratchet , off for a warm up test drive , then back on the lift to gently snug the bolts again.
Let me say , this is probably the most leak free Turbo Buick V6 I have ever seen !!!! Even now at 16,300 miles , after drive and parking it ,it is the smallst of a drip left by the rear main , and I mean maybe just a drip. The trans is 100 % leak free as well.I couldn't be happier with this TTA in the "leak" department !!!
My 82k mile GN , I did the rear main at 49k with neopreme ,needs to be done again, leaking pretty good,.....and my 1,400 GN even leaks some .Will not touch that one thought as I don't drive it.
Whoever did the rear main on my TTA ,did a hell of a job !!!!

yes I like the new seals Rob. Ive seen on some engines where its a tight fit and the seal actualy puts a grove in the crank. Havent seen or head of it on lc2's or SG1's

crosses fingers and knocks on wood ... TTA#299 doesn't leak YET !

Forgot to mention, get a tube of Ultra Black sealant also, use that on the sides of the rear cap in place of the rubber strip and nails that come with the rear seal kit. Fill the gap full of Ultra Black, dab a straightened out paper clip dipped in water into the sealant after filling the gap. The water makes the sealant dry better and quicker, its a reaction it has with the sealant.

I've used the Right Stuff as well, I think I did use it one the first rear main I did as it was recommended as an anaerobic sealant, not needing air to dry, and its in a pressurize can. Yes it is hard to remove, only use it on the rear cap gaps. Does work very well also.
