Replacing OE A/C Compressor with Delco AC1520227

This is all good info to know. I thought I was going to have to put a AC compressor on a few weeks ago. The AC wasn't cold anymore. I got it good and cold now, all was wrong was a defective shrader valve on the low pressure side, causing it to leak out and it would not take on anymore freon because of this. It is so nice to have cold AC once again!!:beach::cold:
 
Once again - nice job Luis. Good to know the pulley swaps over. Sucks that you had to void the warranty on the new unit but the humming would drive me crazy too. I guess we now know why the counterweight was there in the first place!
 
My sticker looks like it is ready to bite the dust so it is possible it might have fallen off. That's one of those things I am hoping will get reproduced someday...

That was a pic of mine, not that good either. Anyway we can at least read what is on it. I guess after 25 years and the heat of the engine takes a toll on these. It sure would be nice to get these reproduced like you said!

Luis - it will come off in decent shape with a little heat from a heat gun on low setting. I took mine off my compressor on the 82 TA and sent it off to the guy who made the decals for the dash buttons and he was able to make me a duplicate of it. It was not 100% exact, but a great repro.

Not sure if yours is different. He could probably duplicate yours and it would be correct for your car. I have to check out the sticker to see if it is the same.:detective:

Yes the only difference on the TTA compressor is the pulley it self all other parts are the same (same part numbers) as the regular compressors GM used.

I used that same Delco compressor (15-20227) on mine around 5 or so years ago ... no humming or other issues what so ever. Mine was a brand new unit and not a rebuilt one (I guess yours is a brand new one as well).

Did you happen to measure the diameter of the pulley (where the belt goes) on the TTA OEM one vs. the Delco replacement? I got my OEM compressor on my worktop so if you have the dimensions of the pulley you guys removed from the new compressor I can measure the OEM pulley and we can compare.

We need to ask Scott Kelly the real reason for the different pulley on the TTA compressor ... sound or vibration ... I spoke to Bill Owen about it and he was not aware and said it would not been for engine vibration issues as they did not have any issues with the accessories.

Also would be interesting to see if the weight of the pulleys differ.

As for reproduction decals ... I had all of them made once but the source "dried up" but might get them all done again.

I had my compressor decal updated with r134 info and same with them one on the heater box. Got a spare set still for mine.

The A/C line decal seems to be out there in two versions ... one with the PAS part number (20TA-....) and another one with the GM part number; otherwise identical. I still have a couple of those.
 
Luis, thanks for posting the dimensions and weight.

Just measured the OEM pulley and here's the dimensions of that one ... so the only difference is that front "bigger lip" all other diameters are identical. See pic below.

If I have mine removed I'll get the weight as well however it will be heavier unless material used is different.

Here's the decals I had made for mine (AC Compressor, Heaterbox and the AC lines).

I might at some point get them done and offer them up as part of a larger kit for our cars ...

Only reason doing them is for my own personal interest then get a few extra done at the same time ... no money in these as you can't get the volume needed to make it viable ...

That might be one idea ... I've done this with a few things over the years (for free) however many people don't know what to do with it and depending on where you take it file formats and other requirements (cut lines, layer structure etc.) differs as well.

And of course once the electronic version is out there then people can do whatever they want with it and you lost control of it all :eam:
