Smoking Issue

I Have had a smoking issue since I bought the car. Figured it was the turbo so I finally got a new 6266 put on last night. Didn't smoke until the car warmed up and then it smoked. Blue color. Up pipe is clean and dry as well as the throttle body and exhaust side of turbo. I'm now hoping it's valve seals?

I had one that smoked for a month because so much oil was in the exhaust, had me thinking it was rings, if its the valve seals it will clear up at speed then start again at idle...

I was hoping that could be it. I just put the downpipe on and ran it with the dump open and it still smoked. It smokes when you start it. Seems to be less at idle. Smokes a big puff when you wing the throttle in park and let off. Doesn't seem to smoke under a load but I can't tell. Very discouraging, the motor only has a few thousand miles on it but was built in 2005.

Sounds like rings but i would pull the valve covers and start it to make sure you don't have too much oil pressure.

Whats too much oil pressure? By the guage it has about what my ttype has. 15-20 idle, 40psi hwy. 65-70 cold start.

I think the rings never seated properly but I didnt own the car back then. Id hate to pull the motor and rering it only to find out it still smokes do to some unresolved issue.

I'm just throwing spitballs but i feel your frustration, but i also question if any fac. gauge is correct and i learned a long time ago that some people's idea of a rebuild is different from mine.. btw what type oil is in it ?

Rotella 15 W 40. It had 10 W 30 mobile one in it before and spoke with that also. It has hyper pistons in it so if I rebuild it it will actually be a good thing because I will put proper Forged pistons and total seal gap was rin forged pistons and total seal rings and it

Yah Robert I agree with you. I really question other peoples engine builds also. I know it has hyper pistons in it so that needs to be addressed in the future. I'm trying to think positive and just look at it like the engine needs upgraded anyways. My Ttype is getting a new motor now so the tta will just have to be down for awhile unfortunately. It's too bad cause I really got the engine bay looking pretty!

Down Pipe is from Nick Micale. It fits awesome and is everything I was hoping it would be!!! No gasket used on the compressor side of the downpipe. Im using a graphite gasket from the 3 bolt header to the turbo. nice and quite. too bad it smokes like a pos and I cant enjoy it.:(

hope you get that sorted out soon that could drive you crazy good luck with it.

Thanks! I cant sleep at night when somethings broke. It is driving me crazy not knowing what it is. Compression check should point me in the right direction

FWIW, mine used to smoke exactly how you described the issue with your car. I installed new valve seals and no more smoke issues. Like you, when something is not working right it drives me nuts and that smoking issue drove me crazy. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted out. Rob

Thank you! This is a very helpful community and the advice and tips are very much appreciated. Honestly it makes owning the car more enjoyable with such a cool forum to all hang out it with.

Hey Robert, Still waiting for the answer on how much oil pressure is too much oil pressure. Cold start up is at 60 lbs at idle as engine temperature reaches 200 degrees oil pressure falls down to the the 10 lbs range. I'm still new to these cars but I"m used to seeing 30-40 lbs oil pressure. I"ve look at the new oil pump from White racing, says it moves 8 gallon per minute at 1750rpm so how much is too much oil pressure? Thanks, Bruce

Thanks Robert, That makes me feel a little better but I have 10/30 Mobile One in it now. I see some of you are running 15/40 Rotella. I run this in my deisel truck but the rest of my cars I run Mobile One and have always had good results with this. Are you suggesting I run the Rotella?

Good ole rotella 15/40 has always treated me good. It has some of the highest levels of zinc and I believe more detergent than most other oils. For me it just seems to last longer and look clearer longer than other oils I've tried. Well all except valvoline racing oil, that was good stuff also.

Blew a little air through the turbo return line to verify that it's not a return line issue. Gonna try valve guide seals when I get some time. I spent all day building an exhaust bracket and putting dents in my brand new downpipe to have it not hit. On a side note I ran my new 6266 today and it spooled really really slow. My car has some wierd blue stall converter that I know is part of the problem. I have a fresh 3200 stall 911 converter for it. I've also heard that the RJC boost controller really speeds up turbo spool?
