Sold #903 started resto on hardtop

Reluctantly sold the TTA so I have space to start working on the Hardtop! It's going to be a full resto....here's a couple interesting things I found....one under the carpet....the other behind the weatherstrip!

The 1st pic is from the door glass theft decals, I had 2 in my car. Whats behind the weatherstrip?? the adhesive? normal.
Those Vin decals are going to be super tuf to have redone.
If the door jam paint is fine I would backtape the edges and not paint the jams on the door to save the vin stickers. Now on the car, I painted the jams and all.
Thats what I did 15 yrs ago.

There is a long cut in the door. It looks like it left the factory like that! The original pain covers the edges.

WoW I thought that was just sticky stuff!!! But a tear,slice rip or whatever now thats weird!!

The weird part is that original paint covers the edges of the slice.

One big worry I have is that I won't be able to get reproduction vin labels for the fenders and doors. I'll be EDP plating everything prior to paint. I contacted a company that reproduces labels, but they didn't seem to want to deal with me here in Germany.

Several years ago, when I had the DCV and ECV cosmetic restorations performed; I removed the Door VIN Labels. At completion of the restorations, the labels were reapplied. The body shop had a specific glue with which to do so. HTH......to remove the labels, without incident, carefully apply heat to the label and surrounding metal; best to heat the metal, not the label; basic heat gun will do.

From a manufacturing standpoint those holes are too close to the bend. The holes probably get deformed during the stamping process but that shouldn't affect their purpose. However, over time, it's hard to say what stresses the car has seen in 20+ years, particularly along that edge. The placement of the holes weakened the strength of that area contributing to the stress fracture.

That is unless the crack happened during manufacturing and slipped thru quality control. :bash:
