stock oil drain plug

It appears that my car has a allen screw for a drain plug, maybe 1/4 inch. Is this possibly the stock drain plug. Also can this be changed to another type.

That is the stock drain plug. You should be able to go any local parts house and get a replacement with a nut style. Might as well get a magnetic one!

There's a reason the engineers fitted the car with that drain plug. If I had to guess I'd say it was for ground clearance. Not that it's going to make a HUGE difference but IMO I rather have the rounded head allen style bolt as opposed to a traditional hex head bolt that could get caught on something.

Along the same lines ever wonder why the stock airbox used a hex nut instead of a easier to remove wing nut? Answer, as I was told, the wing nut would create too much turbulence before the MAF sensor.

Just saying, sometimes there's a method to the madness.

I'm sure Scott kelly can shed some light on this ... the same part number for a replacement drain plug is the hex style (guess same as on the GN from the factory)...

Been trying to find a correct style drain plug (with a magnet) for mine but no luck so far ...

Old thread however Scott did confirm the allen head drain plug was due to ground clearance.

Good news is I found a stainless steel drain plug that is the correct thread and just slightly smaller diameter head .... not ordered one as they don't really do emails and ask me to call them every time I've asked for some overall dimensions and also wanted to know if they could make a magnet version of it ...

So this is the company Totally Stainless they do make some cool stuff like a stainless door striker and got plenty of ss fasteners and kits.

pictured is from their PDF catalog where you can see the allen head drain plug ....

So if anyone like to get one and try it out would be great :-)

Jan, 984 has the original oil plug and washer. I wonder if the allen size is the same on the replacement one?

I tried to get all the dimensions and some photos from them however I had to fax them to get them to get back to me via email (no email address listed anywhere for them) and then they kept asking me to call them and have not found time to do it ...

See if you can give them a call and ask them ... I would have ordered one if they would ship to the UK cheap but they could not tell me how much it would be.

I am calling them. Will let everyone know!!!

Thanks Mike, they do all these in-house so they can easily make one to our OEM dimensions and also a version with a magnet ...

I'm sure they would sell maybe 10 or so of them lol

:thumbup:I am the guinea pig, got it ordered and it may be shipped out tomorrow. 14.90 plus 6.95 shipping with a free catalogue.

This is worth a try for everyone. Will post pics when it arrives. Hope it works!!!

A version with a magnet would be great...

I called them back to maybe change to one with a magnet and they don't have that. This type of stainless can't be used as a magnet. So it will be interesting to see it when it arrives. Compared to the oem one.

Wondering about what washer to use now!!!

Mike,

As long as you ordered the 1/2-20 you are ok as that is the correct thread.

For the washer just a regular 1/2 inch washer like you get at the parts store will work just fine. The GM washer is copper with a rubber coating on the inside area.

For the magnet, the way they are made is there's a small pilot hole machined or drilled where a very strong type of magnet is glued in place ... so if these do look good and work well we could either just get the magnets and proper cement glue and ask them to cut the hole for us or try to drill a hole ourself.

Here's what I was thinking (just get the right magnet and cement for oil and heat etc): DIY Magnetic Oil Drain Plug - Honda-Tech

Magnet something like this maybe: KJ Magnetics - Products

Anyway when you get it and we can compare we can figure it all out.

That is the one I ordered, the good thing is I could use a oil change in the near future.

Only put a little over a thousand miles on it since last oil change, but I like to change the oil frequently.

I started a thread about a yr ago about find nos plugs ... got no ... bites 299 has the correct 1 ... 1397 has a replacement .. im sure i will rip off the front mount or the trans pan before the oil pan now though

Wow got the stainless oil pan plug in today. Haven't taken it out to measure it yet, but it looks great. Enclosed was a catalogue, even with turbobuick section in there also included was a sticker.

That was quick, looks nice and shiny ... I do like their stainless door strikers as well ;)

I'll post pictures of the OEM drain plug when I'm on my other computer where I got the photos ...

If you take some overall dimensions would be great.

It looks like a really good candidate to make one with a magnet that's for sure.

I agree it looks like a prime candidate for a magnet. Here are some measurements, some metric some sae.

The allen size is 7/32.

Attached is the OEM one; photos with dimensions on them. Head diamater is slighty larger that the 22mm I put on the drawing (it's 22.2 or so) but rounded it down.

I wonder how many we would have to guarantee him to make an exact copy, unpolished, so we could paint it, but with a magnet? I wonder what it would cost per piece?

Call him and ask ... I would buy 2 defenitly :-)

These are all CNC machined so would not take too much effort for them too change the program and make them ...

Problem as always is promise him some sort of volume as he would only sell maybe 20 or so over the next 12 month ...

However they do say they do custom work so could be that they wont be that much more expensive ... I doubt he would add the magnet but we can do this ourselfs if he cut it so we could fit one .. the pilot at the end could be shorter than the OEM piece.

Jan, When the oem one is 22mm the new one is 38.1mm or 1.5" across the top.

At the bottom it is 11.11 mm or 7/16in. across.

The biggest difference being the total length, new one has all threads on the length and it is 11.11mm or 7/16 in. long.
