Inspired by the "Stupid lines at a car show thread", I thought I'd throw this one out for y'all to think about.
Last Tuesday I head up to a local little show at a pub (Boomers on M-59 for those of you in the area) with the 89. I park, pop the hood, and the crowd gathers with the usual questions.
An older gentleman hangs around for a while and tells me that he saw a bunch of these where he worked...the conversation went something like this...
Me: Really? That's pretty cool. How many is a bunch?
Him: Oh, I dunno, it was a long time ago...quite a few...maybe 100...maybe 150...they didn't get there all at once, I know that...trucks would roll in every day with these things on 'em...
Me (now intrigued): Wow...where did you work?
Him: I was a line supervisor for GM Powertrain in Pontiac...they had a whole bunch get delivered and we had to move them indoors for some prep work (no, he didn't remember what was done).
Me (now fully attentive): Holy crap...get delivered from where?
Him: I seem to think California, but that was a really long time ago.
Me: How long?
Him: Boy, had to be 20 years at least.
Me: You don't happen to remember when they were delivered, do you?
Him (laughing): Nope...this thing just jarred my memory from back then.
Me: Do you think there was snow on the ground?
Him (thinking): Y'know, now that you say that, no there wasn't any snow...but there wasn't any leaves either...so it must of been fall or spring.
The conversation continued, but nothing more of substance came out of it. He's a regular at this little show, so we promised to hook up again.
But I'm wondering...would those cars have been the Parade cars at Indy? Did they get shipped to GM first, and then to Indy?
It was definately a fascinating conversation.
