Thermostat

What temp thermostat should be used in these cars. I am going to flush the coolant and replace the thermostat. I noticed the old coolant is looking a little dirty, since I replacd the coolant jug i want to clean out the system and use all fresh, figured now would be a good time to change thermostat as well.

Jason and I were having a discussion about this very subject lately.

Some run and like the 160 , others like and run the 180.

Personally, I run a 160 in all my cars. I would say most GN/TTA owners run a 160.

Like Rich said, different strokes for different folks!

Whichever stat you decide on make sure the chip burner knows so the fans come on and go off at the correct temp. btw I run the 160

Ok guys. This thread is not yet complete. I'd like to get a suggested manufacturer and part number for the 160. If you go to the auto parts store and tell them LC2, VIN7, all that comes back are part numbers for the 180 and 195.

michb3c, I know for a fact I bought a 160 thermostat from Oreillys back in 2003. It was either a Murray or Stant. I'm thinking the later. Worse comes to worse, Kirban or full throttle sells it.

No O Reillys or Murrays around here. I just spent the last couple hours registering with Gates.com and Stant.com, downloading and viewing their catalogs. Only OEM thermostat part numbers are shown (all 180 and 195). If I just had a thermostat manufacturer and part number, other parts stores around here might have it or can get it from a local warehouse.

Full Throttle has it, but that does me no good today. The best time to do this task is now. I started a new job and have no vacation time saved yet. So working on the car is best done on weekends and especially official holidays.

Jason is right, they are no longer made from any manufacturer that I searched. What full throttle and T/A performance have done is to have a 160 turned down to a 44mm diameter from 54mm, and I believe it is a chevy V8 thermostat that is the application.

Ah-ha! Well, though the car will be "down" this weekend, at least I now know exactly where I stand. I imagine that Full Throttle will not be open tomorrow, but I'll try calling them anyway. The way things are going, I'd better get two of these.

So that the weekend was not a total waste, I worked on some other "system" issues that I've been having. The AEM wide band gauge outputs an analog voltage that can be fed to my ECM for closed loop operation. However, the AEM signal output was consistently a little bit too high - making my ECM think that the A/F was about 0.3 A/F higher than it really was. So I spent the day building a voltage divider to fix that.
