Timing Belt

I have about 80k miles and have not yet replaced my timing belt. My car is just street use so what should I replace it with? Want to upgrade from the nylon but don't think a double roller is really necessary. Advice?? Also how much should this typically cost to have done??

ummm the LC2 uses a timing chain and you don't need to worry about it unless you're replacing the cam and then it's just a good idea and time to replace it.

Now if you're talking about the accessory belt, if it's not making noise or anything just leave it alone. If it breaks the worst that is going to happen is that you won't be charging your battery so you've got about 5-10 miles to get where you're going.

Tony like Jared said these cars have a chain and not a belt but yes the one gear is nylon. I've seen them last way into the 100K area. I just took an engine apart a few weeks ago that had 180K on it and it was all stock all original and there was some stress cracks on the nylon gear and a tooth missing but that was pretty impressive for 180K engine! If your looking for something to do then I would say knock your self out and do it. Might as well take some pics of the process so we all can see! :) But no double roller needed at all. Replace that nylon gear with a steel one and you'll be fine for as long as you own the car! :) Let us know how you make out!

OK, so it's the gear that is nylon, got it. I just remember years ago a friend had a TTA and was coming across some plastic bits when he changed the oil. So it was from that gear and he replaced the gear along with the chain at the time. I am not in a mood to tear apart my motor in any way!- just wanting to do any preventative regular maintenance after 20 years of this car being very reliable. Thanks!

Yea I hear ya. But like I said we opened that 180K motor and I was surprised to find the nylon gear still in there and in one piece. It didn't have many more miles on it but it made it that far. The car was stock all it's life but it's been down the 1/4 a number of times. I guess it all depends on how the car is treated how long it will really last. But you should be fine if your under 100K :)
