To subframe or not to subframe my TTA?

First off... a little about the car. I have a cloth/hardtop TTA which now has 3100 miles on it. All mods so far are bolt in, and I have all the original take-off parts except for the original muffler. Keep this in mind when you read the rest of my post.

I recently purchased some Global West subframe connectors, but they are still sitting on the floor of my garage, mostly because my welder friend who was going to help me install them hasn't had the time. Meanwhile, I've been thinking, and I don't know if I really want to put them on or not. If I had a t-top car, I'd put them on in a heartbeat. However, I have a hardtop car... and while it's a lot stiffer than a T-top car, I know that subframes will still help things.

Of all the knowledgeable people I've talked to in person, 3 of them are for subframes (including myself) and about 12 people (including some other TTA owners) say I'm nuts for wanting to weld to a cloth/hardtop car.

Let me elaborate.

The car doesn't get driven much. Local carshows usually ever other week, and occasionally shows about an hour away. I don't plan on dragging the car much, maybe an occasional trip to the strip 2 or 3 times a summer. I won't be out there every weekend cutting 1.8 60' times. I'll never run slicks on the car, but I might run drag radials at some point, but even those aren't likely. I don't plan on modding it much faster than it is now (12.30ish on street tires, I'm doing a THDP and replacing the Slowmaster with a straight-through muffler and I'm done). It'll never see a transbrake. Driving on the street, I never launch it hard, I roll out slowly and then ease into the throttle. So, in all honesty, and taking my driving style and usage into account, should I weld to a car with 13 siblings left?

I'd appreciate any input here. Based on how I'm going to use the car, are they *really* necessary?

Thanks for any advice... the engineer part of my brain is telling me "anything you can do to strengthen the unibody is a good thing!" while the car collector part of my brain is telling me "this is going to the first and a fairly substantial permanent modification to a very rare car." Please help me clear my head!

Gokou,
I just missed you at the Trans-A-Rama this year! I wanted to talk with you about your car.
With so few of your car's combo being made, I would try to advise you that you not modify your car. As for being rare, with few mods as possible, your car is way more valuable to both you and to future owners (if you ever sell). But, the bottom line is: It is your car, do with it as you will! If someone wants to save your car from what you would do to it, then let them buy it from you!
If it was my car, and me as a Trans Am collector, I would not modify it at all. Even though I own car #231, which is T-tops/leather, I still would not be willing to even consider offering my car as trade for yours. I have bought mine new, and I intend to keep it for as long as I live. But that's not to say that I wouldn't mind having yours! :^))
I just hope that you enjoy it as I have mine, throughout the years to come!

Later,

George

My $.02, Id rather have weld marks on the under carriage rather than the chance of getting Stress Cracks. My firend had a GTA Hardtop and he had stress marks. Not a Nice Look...

Good Luck on whatever you choose.

Keep us informed

Thanks

Sorry I missed you too. If you had yelled or waved your arms as I was driving out, I would have stopped to talk. If you're coming back up here for another TACA meet, let me know and I'll make sure to bring the car. I'm sure we'll meet again soon.

Right now I'm leaning towards not putting the subframes on. I don't feel that I drive it enough or launch it hard enough to justify them. Everything on the car now is a bolt-on (short of the muffler, which I want to replace anyways), and I have every original take-off part (except the muffler and stock fixed wastegate regulator) so I could easily go back to stock. Well, I can't exactly go back completely stock because I can't reuse the 4 original stripped lugnuts and studs on the driver's front wheel. (I love 80's GM quality control!)

The last 2 things I plan on doing to the car is the 3" downpipe and replacing the flowmaster with some kind of straight through muffler (dynomax, SLP, borla, I don't know yet... suggestions?). Again, things which are easily changed and not permanent. I'm also debating if I want to change my rear main or not, but it doesn't leak enough yet to justify replacing it. Gotta love it, my newest car is the only one that leaks oil.

One thing that might sway me to put the subframes on is some data and a time guesstimate on the cracks. About how many miles/launches am I looking at on average until the dreaded cracking/wrinkles start?
