TTA stock exhaust

TURBOGTA

This might be a question scott kelly could answer. When the cars were tested did they use the exhaust they did because it worked well with engine? 3' exhaust ever tested? GM only would ok stock diameter used on GTA's only? I know 3' would flow better but didn't Scott Kelly test and crunch #'s on this aspect of car. Just wondering because he seems like he wouldn't leave anything untested

I'm sure they tested other systems for like the HO TTA however what they had to do and stick to was stuff that already where EPA certified and approved already or this project would not ever have happened due to the very high cost of redoing any EPA testing / certification.

One example was using the FWD heads but changing the pistons to maintain the 8.0 to 1 compression (even if the higher compression 9:1 would have been preferred at the time I was told) or they would have had to re-certify.

So even if they wanted to do other stuff (water cooled turbo was on the agenda as well as a optional Dana rear end) they could not as there were no budget to support it.

Well remember this car was done under "the radar" and only way getting it all done was to make sure it would not cost any upfront money what so ever hence they did what they did to get it all done ... there were several times they stopped the project due to issues they ran into but in the end (very late in the game) they got an official project and could move forward getting these cars manufactured very much thanks to the help of the union @ Van Nuys that did whatever they could to get some more projects in there trying to keep the plant alive (by the way the TTA didn't help them in the end).

yep they had to use parts they had laying around the plants ... im sure it pissed off the vette engineers.

I got the exhaust of a 48k mile car collecting dust ... the 9 bolt is beside it. Jan u still looking for the sticker ? I can take a pic if u need one off the 9 bolt

They also probably wanted a squeezed down exhaust profile for production reasons. sticking a 3" down that little hole would of put production behind to have to manipulate and specialize the fitment compared to the 2" down pipe.

Yep they definitely needed the clearance there as modifying the unibody frame would been a no go due to cost (they did do a cost model for this before Bill Owen came up with using the FWD narrower heads).

Yes if its the "8EU" sticker on there (so the first early 9 bolts) that would be great, straight on photo (a couple).
