How can u tell if your turbo needs rebuilt/replaced ? My next question I'm sure has already been addressed somewhere on here but since I'm typing...... if one needs rebuilt who would be the best for the job? If wanting to replace which one keeps stock appearance? Ta 49? Keep in mind stock motor. Thanks for a topic that I'm sure has been beat to death!!!!!

lot of shaft play oil on the intake or the exhaust side of the turbo,smoking pretty shore there are a few company's for a rebuild you might have to do some research .The ta49 is the closest appearing turbo to the stock one but could get you to the high elevens with the right combo.
 
Thas what I figured.......I'm seeing and feeling oil residue on the air intake side. Damn I need some more overtime at work!!!!!
 
Unless your trying to retain total originality, I would get a nice used stock appearing TA-49. Stock motor and transmission/convertor speed, will respond ideally with the TA-49. You could source one through the tubobuick.com website for about $500 or less. A stock turbo rebuild may cost you that much or maybe half as much...$200 DontKnow:

I had a TE-44 (same internal specs, but bigger compressor housing) and it was a great turbo for stock motor. I sold it used for $450 8 years ago, so there's a baseline.

If you want to rebuild the stock turbo ( or any turbo for that matter ) contact Bison on the TB forum or you can pm me and i will give you his phone #, Brian is a turbo guru.
 
Bison is great to work with. A true asset to the community... Very smart man...
He will custom spec you a turbo when you give him your combination.
You will be hard pressed to find better prices too.

I have a good used TA49 sitting on the shelf. Took it off my GN when I upgraded.

Before you change the turbo suggest you check for shaft play and make sure you're not getting oil in the intake via the pass side vent line to the turbo intake bell if it is still connected.

You are correct But, last time i seen one even on a low mileage car? many moons ago with the exception being the H/T that just sold, but even if it is plugged make sure its not sucking air.
