Vinyl Wrap vs Re-Paint???

Has anyone vinyl wrapped or had their TTA painted?

Since I have been on the board, I have read several people have had their car's repainted in factory original, and one had a custom job, that looked awesome but got ripped off. I am getting closer to starting on my RAYDER project and changing the exterior color to black, like the Buick GNX. I just wanting to do the best job for the right price. I have had two quotes for complete car/black metallic paint at two local shops and both were in the $3-4000 range and would take 4-6 weeks to complete.

I am also very active on the Corvette forum and plastic dip and wrapping is a very hot topic on custom mods on cars, especially matte white and black. There is a balloon white pearl that is a stock color on lambo's that looks incredible. They also make a Black Metallic and that is what I am leaving too for wrap/paint on RAYDER. I am also intrigued since a wrap would just cover the factory paint and if I get tired of it or sell it, it can easily be removed and your factory color again. Plus it is my understanding that it is much cheaper than painting too.

So just looking for some advice, pros and cons, and there is no better place to kick around ideas than with other TTA enthusiasts.

What costs are involved, material and labor??? For both wrap and paint...etc....

paint it ! if you paint it black find the real true black ..... gn's have a slight bronish look in the sun .... i cant remember the paint code but its solid black. If i paint my gn im using the solid black black ...... i just put a gator on my 2 man boat an am going to have to clear both sides because of h20
 
I have the paint code on a quote and it is just a simple gm black. 19U is the paint code.

If you could ask your buddy for a ball park estimate that would be great. Thanks Mike.

Just my 2 cents, but as for repaints-you get what you pay for. If you are looking for show quality its usually more than 3-4k. Also keep in mind that black is not forgiving and the paint job needs to be of utmost quality or you will see flaws. Have just been thru a repaint with the MSE and it came out very good. Got to see the car thru the refinishing stages and give input and critique as it went along so that helped. Good luck!:)
 
Code 19 is GM black. U just designates it as the color on the upper part of the body - like if the car was 2 tone.
IMHO - have the car painted black. Vinyl wrap will never do it justice. Like Kymmee said - make sure the body work is done right, because you will notice every imperfection.

Don't know anything about vinyl wrap but i do know if you are going to paint it AND change the color AND do it right you will have completely take the car apart (like fast400) If anyone tells you they can do it for less than 5-6k and less than 6-months they are full of you know what. It would be expensive and time consuming but bad as hell when done
 
Repaint for sure, but yes going to cost alot. I'm in the same boat with #77, shes just about all stripped, and I to was going to paint it triple black, but no i'm sticking with white, and maybe some pearl in there. Just make sure you get a shop thats going to do it right.

Kman, I'm looking at $6200 for paint and body work in the original color. That price was from a guy who does restorations in a small one man shop. I took the T/A to a couple well known body shops in the area and they were both over $8000. Good luck in your search, I hope you find the right shop. Your car will look awesome in black.
 
Thanks again for the advice. I was budgeting $6k for the job and I thought the first two were a little low, but they are small shops in town and I think they really need the work. I don't think a lot of people are re-painting their cars these days. Now it the time to do it.
 
your right Kman, alot of these shops are most likely hurting for business right now, use it to your advantage and keep in mind that most of the cost is labor, not materials
 
I dont think wrapping is the way to go. Talking to my decal guy, wraps are for panel, commercial vehicles and cars usually are drag or race. Wraps work but not if you're looking for quality flawless. I enrolled at Lincoln tech in the body and collision program. Ive learned alot. Im doing this because im tired of having cars painted and tired of so so results...even at $3000. Thats why im learning to do this and paint my cars I sell. Im learning about matte black paint jobs and a flat pearl white paint job. My Convt TTA is either going to be flat black with a pearl to it or flame red metallic (stock 87 color) with red GTA interior.
 
havent got a qoute but im taking mine to phase 3 kustoms abt 5 miles from me ... they put a body kit on plies's moseratti that cost 12k then had to fab it ..... they painted both of my spoliers 250 a peice
 
So, I asked my friend who wraps race cars and buses for a living and he quoted about $3,400 for an entire TTA. He also stated that it will look good from over 10 feet, but the black will not look like paint close up. Hope this helps with your decision.
