My regulator is getting flaky under load (lights, fans, etc.), so what amperage rating does everyone use and where do get them? Not interested in chain store remans...
I got mine rebuilt from the company that chromed mine for $35. They rebuilt it to 144 amps. Works great.
I don't know why you are against chain store remains as my dad has one on his GN and it has no problems. Hell, the TTA had one for a few years too and no issues.
I would highly recommend staying away from the Impala SS alternator. While it does fit, it only uses two of the three mounting screws and I would not want that..Vibration kills electronics.
remains are normally alright and you should be able to find a place close by. If you can't find anywhere I'll be in the Ithaca area around the beginning of august and I'll be more than willing to help anyone out in the area, but if you know of a problem beforehand I can bring the parts off my car.
I was going to just rebuild it myself but the regulator is $60, diode trio is $142 and so on. GM must have really been proud of this one. I see it only fits a handful of applications.
My problem with chain store alternators is the questionable parts and practices of the rebuild of thier store promoted line. I'd *feel* better about a Bosch or Delco remanned unit.
I'll look on e-bay and Rock auto and see if something trips my trigger.
WS6 what is wrong with the company that quicky used? A chrome alternator would look really nice under the hood of your car. If I wasn't so broke from the rest of my engine project I'd send mine out to get chromed!
Quicky, where did you get yours rebuild/chromed? How long did it take?
I know the price has gone up for chroming but I am not sure how much it costs now. The 140 amp is not a must have at all. It is just what they rebuilt it to. I believe it took around two weeks for the uppipe, turboshield, and alternator with shipping. I told them no hurry and they knocked $50 bucks off the order.
There used to be a 200A kit available - I think from Turbobuicks.com, and U can save a bit of $$. I already had a chrome case because I blew my stock Alt setting a Volt Booster too high and wanted to keep the chrome case on the replacement.
I bought one and did it myself and it wasn't too difficult. These Alts come apart fairly easily. If U get it from them, have them send U the little metal link that goes from the Diode assembly to the Brush assembly. Otherwise U have to unsolder and resolder that piece and that doesn't work very well, if at all.
Hey, I noticed that we cannot copy what we write here and paste somewhere else. I do this all the time on other websites when I want to save what I post. Not sure what we would have to do to change that ?
