what kind of bandit is this?!

my neighbor has a trans am for sale. he says its a bandit edition, and the title says "186 of 200". it has a chrome roll bar, which he says was factory installed. i dont know what engine, but I think the year is '76. It is in pretty good shape, and I can get it for almost nothing. my cousin talked to someone who supposedly knows about TAs, and he said that if it has a factory installed roll bar, and the title says it is "#--- of 200" that this was was of 200 made for the movie and is worth a bangload of cash. Does anyone know about this? Would anyone be interested in this, as I would have to turn it pretty quick if I laid down the cash for it. email me [email protected]

There was no factory installed roll bar...and I'd look at the title again...have never seen nor heard of a title containing build information on a car...

And the first "Bandit" S/E cars were in 77, although they did use a few 76s remade to look like 77s in the movie.

Pontiac never made a "Bandit" edition of the Trans Am. Many people refer to the SE as a Bandit, but it was not officially called so by Pontiac. The cowl plate will show either Y81, Y82, or Y84 to indicate a real SE.
However....in 1981, Trans Am Specialties in Cherry Hill,NJ made 200 "Bandits". Among other things, they came with a mid 70's 455 bored .030 over(462 cubic inches) and a Doug Nash 5-speed. They had a plaque on the dashboard and the word "Bandit" embroidered in the carpet in the trunk. They were insanely expensive for the time- about $30k.
The only one I ever saw was on e-bay a few years back.
I don't believe a roll-bar was part of the conversion.

100% correct...and I saw the same one on eBay that you did...if I recall correctly, it did not sell for right around 30K.

- 380 hp at 4800 rpms, 430 lb. ft. of torque at 2800 rpms (estimated)

- 3900 lb curb weight (estimated)
- 21 gallon fuel tank
- 11.0 vented front disc brakes, 11.1 vented rear discs
- Pontiac’s WS6 handling option
- 255/60R15 Goodyear tires
- Recaro seats
- Blauplunkt four speaker stereo
- Escort radar detector
- Motion sensitive theft alarm
- CB radio (of course)

Zero to sixty times were measured in 6.0 seconds, and it ran a traction-challenged 14.3 quarter mile at 97 miles an hour (with a 3.08 rear gear).

Much of the sticker price went to Universal Studios for licensing the "Bandit" moniker...

What you need to do is to post you question here http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/
in the Firebird Trans am area. There's a wealth of knowledge there pertaining to all T/A's special editions and what not.
Now you may not find out what I *think* your looking for, but at least you'll find the truth. And it may be harsh, but at least you won't have bought yourself a basemodel firebird that someone hacked a "one of none" option package on.
