Which Headers are these???

These are the headers that are on TTA#1040/Rayder. They were on when I bought the car and appear larger then the stock headers. The stock header gaskets did not fit them. So I am trying to figure out what headers they are and trying to find the right gaskets for them. The only info on the headers is on the front left it has a "C" and the front right it has "1989".

Any ideas or suggestions?

Here are a couple of pics of front and back.

If they are the stock headers, I can't figure out why the stock fel-pro gaskets don't seem to fit right. I talked to Mark and buickgm.com and he said Remflex used to make them for our car but since they were in such low demand they stopped. I also asked Mike at full throttle and said they may need to be custom cut. I am waiting on one more source, he thought cometics make a set that fit our car.

What about putting a bead of Permatex Copper RTV on both surfaces and attaching it, basically making your own gasket????

Anyone else run into this problem????

Shame Remflex stopped making them....I used them and they are/were awesome.

So....Copper RTV is your only real option as the aftermarket ones that are paper/foil laminate burn out pretty damn quick.

You'll need to get the header flange flat,flat,flat...and did I mention they need to be flat?

I suggest you take them to a machine shop and have them flattened on a surface grinder. A competent machine shop should be able to whip a fixture jig and have them flat in 10 minutes.

It is critical that the thickness of the flange be maintained top to bottom otherwise you change the angle of the collector causing all sorts of alignment issues with the crossover pipe.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you happen to remember or having any records of the Remflex model # for the header gasket for our car? I'd like to call them back tomorrow and specifically ask for that model, maybe they still have some. I wasn't too confident with the person I spoke with on the phone today.

I could look in my receipts, maybe I saved it.

TR Custom Parts (Mark Hueffman) is where and who I bought them from, I have bought them twice and they work awesome...in fact if you can convince him to get another run going, I'd be in for 1 set for a spare set. They stick like glue and do not blow out... ever. They have very specific install/torque specs so be aware when you tighten them down.

I cant imagine Remflex has discarded the pattern, but more than likely purged thier inventory of them because of poor sales/limited market. I think every TTA owner should have set on hand, they are that good.

But if they wont make more than we're back to the copper RTV fix, which works pretty well if your flanges are flat, flat ,flat....I mean they need to be flat....really....flat.

Yea, I talked to Mark today and he told me to call remflex direct. If you find the model number that would be great. I just emailed Mark too to see if he has the model #.

Next questions, anyone know where I can find a replacement set of bolts for the exhaust manifold to headers? Should be 12.

Awesome thanks.

Just got some ARP bolts and dropped the headers off to get them powder coated in Black. Will look much better that way.

Here's what I used on mine for the headers:

The studs are slightly larger diameter than the OEM studs used; could not find anything that would work in the OEM dimensions at the time.

So you will need to open up the dipstick tube bracket opening around the stud and same for the alternator brackets ... just try when you get the studs and you see what I mean.

Thanks Guys for the help.

Yea, sorry...it is a ceramic black satin specifically used for heads as he explained it. A little pricey but will look better than the reddish metal.

I'm glad they're still available and folks? When you get them, don't manhandle them as they are somewhat fragile in that they will crack if bent....don't take them out of the package till you're ready to use them.

Slip them in place and torque to 14ft lbs.IIRC...They will "crush" just the right amount at that torque. Too much tighter and you've just made them regular composite gaskets.
