9 second trans am

Hypotheticly if I got a 3rd generation Trans Am(whats the stock weight) and added twin turbos to generate about 550-700 hp. What would the estimated 1/4 mile time be?From what I have found they came stock at 3200lbs which I find a little sketchy. So far just from going 1/4 mile time calculators I should get 9 seconds. I would remove seats and lighten the car up. For all that I care I could have a Joe dirt replica but under the hood would be a whole nother story.Besides I can go civic hunting and stun the hell out of them:dumb:. So tell me what you guys think.

Sounds like a plan. Banks is a good source for twin turbocharging small block chevy motors...

I don't know how to answer all your quesstions, but I can guarantee you that 700 HP in a 3200 lb car will not yield a 9 second pass without one hell of a launch.

550-700 flywheel horsepower should get you into the low 11's to mid 10's in a stockish weight thirdgen Trans Am of around 3600lbs.

If I were trying to build another thirdgen there's no doubt I'd go LS1, you can build a carbed 408" LQ4 based motor with GMPP heads and the right cam that will put the car well into the 10's and a little spray would get well into the 9's.

And unlike the Buick engines, the possibilities with the LS1 family of engines are just about limitless :)

Well for the engine I was looking at either LT1s or 427(I'd make a 427 stroker if I found one a a junkyard). How do you build an engine for spray?BTW The car would be strpped in the interior

u want lsx not LT1. I went a 10.97 @ only 119mph blew a hg @ the 1k ft how much hp did that take for a 3,730lb car with a stock longblock from oilpan to intake ?

Well for the money am I better off upgrading the cams, heads and stroking an ls1?(I can't find any info on ls3s)BTW I have a friend who works at GM so I can get discounts.

you can go faster with the truck iorn blocks an other heads beside ls1. ls1 starts out at only 346 ci ls2 is 364

You can buy cop ls1 cars cheap now

I am sure there are faster but wow...just wow!

I am soooo sold on the 455 Procharger combo. :bounce: Buick:bounce:....

LS series are limitless as Steve posted though.

a Procharger on just about anything will run if it's built right...no reason whatsoever to put a Buick 455 in a TA...you want a 455 get a Pontiac 455 ;) But in todays HP market a LS motor (LQ9 block) is the only way to go. It will be cheaper then a 455, lighter and mostly way more parts available for the LS based motor. Now I would do a twin turbo LS if it were me...make about 700hp and go 9's while still being streetable and on 93 pump gas with alky :)

Cool:cheers: I am still stuck in the 70's and 80's with the Buicks.lol :dirol:

I am not familiar with the LS series but know they are top of the line!

Off topic:dumb:, a friend of mine has about great condition LS Camaro with bolt on's and has 22k invested. Awesome CAR!!! Last I checked he couldn't get 8k:coffee: if I am not mistaken. This is why I never went that route.:read:

No disrespect intended to the LS series!!! :NOS:

yeah I hear yah...my 1st car was a '68 Firebird w/350...later I replaced the 350 with a BBC 454 LS6 then got married, had kids and sold the car before it was finished. My favorite is still a '70-'71 SD 455 TA

The problem with those LS Camaro's is not the motor but the fact that they made a bazillion of them...motors are sweet, rears and trans not so good. The only ones currently holding any real value are the 2002's since they were the end of the run until the new 2010's. My brother just sold avery nice '00 SS and got lucky to get 13K for it...another buddy sold a very nice '99 Formula with some nice mods and low miles...started at 15k and eventually let it go for 9k :(

Yup that problem is why it's the perfect time to get into one :) I picked up a 98 bright green Trans Am for $7K, bone stock with 87K miles in excellent condition. It's run a best of 13.40 @ 103.75mph and I cant wait to start modding, plus being one of only 98 bright green Trans Am coupes built for 1998 model year it's rarer than most TTA's :)

Just like the TTA, trans and rear become a problem as you start to get faster but like the TTA the chassis and suspension is a great design and with OBD2 diagnosing problems and tuning the car become so much easier. I do miss running a 10.50 second TTA powered GTA at the track but working on these LS motors has been so much fun I had to park the V6 and get my own LS Trans Am

Well, How hard would putting a 454 in a 3rd gen be?Im looking at a 454 option with the engine stroked to 496. Any idea how many horses I could get out of one of those?I really like this because of the high torque numbers:yes:

don't need a big heavy gas hungry 454 to make lots of toque...a turbo motor with 1/2 the cubic inches will make just as much torque if not more

I dont know what your budget is but to build a car for cheap you might want to look into buying someone's project and going from there. For example with $7500 you could start with a nice looking 88 GTA hardtop with a stock LS1 swapped into it that has an LS6 intake and a small shot that goes 11.80's

88 Gta Ls1 Nos Fs/ft Nj - LS1TECH

Well budget is looking anywhere from 3-5k kinda on the cheap side but if I get a 10 second car i'll be so happy.
Any way what would you guys pay for a 84 firebird good body good interior, with an ls1 stock and a t56 6speed manual

If it's all functional and runs reliably, then maybe $3000, Need pics to determine in my own mind first.

Well what is better-Ls1 to ls6 stroked and carbed or LT1 to LT4 stroked and carbed. Is the LT1 block better vs the aluminum block?
