getting ready for the reunion

OK so I am planning on driving my ass all the way to the reunion so I thought I had better clean up old TTA 733. It's leaking oil from the turbo drain tube so I bought a new gasket. I also ordered an rjc pcv valve for it too, hopefully that will last forever like they say it does.

I took the 61mm turbo off my other car and put it on this one over the winter and the car sure does go good!!! I decided I had better upgrade the fuel pump now that I have the bigger turbo, car already has a hot wire kit.

I ordered a racetronix fuel pump(walbro 340M), pulled the gas tank and put it in. All was well, fuel pressure was great! went to 68-9 psi on full boost, just what I needed.

Then the next day I drove the car downtown and parked all day, then drove home through traffic and two blocks from my house the fp guage goes crazy!!! up down up down up down then zero and car stalls. The car is still rolling so I threw it in nuetral and started it again, then kept driving and it did it again!! Only this time fp went to zero and car would not start. It died. in the middle of the street. So I walked home and got my jeep and towed it home. I checked all the fuses and connections they were all good.

I went onto the racetronix forum and they think it is a kink in the plumbing inside the tank. I put the pump in myself and the rubber hose that comes in the kit is wedged between pump and the metal fuel line so I dont think it could kink at all, plus there are clamps holding it. Plus it worked great for a whole day!?!?! This is not the first pump I have installed, I did my other car and it has been fine for years.

Does this sound like a typical walbro fuel pump failure??

I am gonna pull the tank AGAIN and look inside, this kinda thing makes me wish I had the "change fp in 10 min" mod. Has anyone done that? I think it would take just as long to cut a hole in my trunk floor as it would to pull the tank. I don't have many good tools so...

What do you guys/gals think?

Scott did the 10 mod to change the fuel pump. You run Bosch 044 External Pump. That is the route I will take when or if the Walbro 340M fails.

As far as a gasket for the turbo drain... do not use a gasket. Use Loctite (hi temp, high strength) forgot the item number.... on the 2 bolt threads. Make sure everything is lined up properly and tighten. I promise, you will not have a leak.

I want to do the fuel pump access panel as well. I am going to do it this summer.

Joe, are you saying your car doesn't have a gasket on the drain??

Jarred, sounds like you are getting the car well prepared!

Yes, I do not use a gasket on the drain. I had very minor leak from the gasket after I installed the 6262. I shot Brian (Bison) a pm and he gave
me this pointer. I took his advice and NO LEAKS. Not a drip!

no gasket hey!!! well good advice I may just try that, even though I just bought 3 gaskets lol o well they 2 bucks....

the trap door mod I think is too crazy for me, but that is just me, and besides I am getting really good at this now ugh.

where do I get a bosch 044 external pump and do I have to remove the walbro from within the tank to run this pump??

Jarred.

I have to drop my tank soon, and I know from experience that changing the pump is a pain, especially when you have to do it because the pump you just put in is not working right. But I don't think it is a good idea to cut a hole in the car. It hurts resale value as well as ruining the integrity of the car.
Jared - how high did you lift the car to get the tank out. It has been awhile but I remember I had to get the body up pretty high and I just cleared it after bending the neck a bit. Did you remove exhaust or did you work with it under there and just disconnected?

I do not want to get slapped :bleed: for giving out the advice on the external pump. I know it's old school tech.... Ratfink runs an external pump I think??? Maybe he will post up. TTA fuel pump replacement is pita... Not like a GN.

Red Armstrong at Quad Air sells an XP pump. It's a Walbro... It's all the pump you will ever need.

I think the external pump is a good idea. It sure makes servicing easier if your racing the car. It's probably noisier though.

haha +1

My friend has a low 10 sec Turbo Regal. He is using the external Weldon pump. Holy toledo, sounds like a chop saw.

I jacked the car up as high as I could and then took the exhaust off and let it hang, I could not remove it completely out from under the car, I just let it hang on the rear axle. remove the panhard, heat sheilds and straps and then viola! tank comes out after 18 hours of trying lol

For me atleast the tank goes back in in about 30 seconds, makes me wonder why it takes for ever to come out????

Im gonna drain the tank and prolly put a new intank pump in though, I feel that racetronix owes me a good pump atleast.

the weldon pump is big $$ though hey, not that I wouldn't buy one if I really needed one. So do you have to remove the intank pump to run an external pump??

This TTA 733 is not for racing (but it did do 11.6 witha 52mm turbo, now has a 61mm) but more for street driving and killing stangs.

I remember having the same issue - no matter which way i tried to get it out it hung up on the body. But it went right back in with no issues.

Yes you will have to remove your dead pump. If the pump is dead, fuel will not flow...

I have never done this so... I will have to ask my friend. But I assume you could pull the pump off the sending unit and put a hose in place of the pump, then....

Jason is going to kill me...

Maybe check your fuel reg and return lines as well as the fuel filter just to make sure those parts are all good. As for the external pump, I've ran the same Bosch external pump for the last 20 years or so. The stock pump is still in the tank as well. It just runs tandom. Mounted it a bit before the fuel filter. Wrapped it in some rubber packing material. You can barely hear it running. I forget which Bosch # it is. I got it from Hahn Racecraft back in 1992 or so.

BTW, 69 psi fuel pressure @WOT may be too rich IMO. I'm running 61psi @ WOT and it's feeding a CPT61 pushing 25 psi (with alky). I actually think I may be a bit on the rich side, but I haven't hooked up my AFR gauge yet to verify.

You have to run the intank pump to run an external pump the way you guys want to.

The Bosch 044 is not strong enough to pull THROUGH a stock nonfunctioning pump and still supply 70 PSI against a 1:1 regulator.

Do as you all please, I threw the external pump out. Had I known they had this much value I would have kept it!

I'm going to kill you for giving advice when you are spewing BS. ;)

Go ask your friend if he runs it in tandom. I bet his answer is no.

Go ask your friend if runs through the stock hat. I bet his answer is no.

Go ask your friend if he runs the stock fuel lines. I bet his answer is no.

Go ask your friend to rub your ass with lotion. I bet his answer is yes. :kissass:

I have 43 or 44 psi with the vac line off so when at 24# boost I think that 69 psi fuel pressure is bang on not rich. I thought we wanted 1 psi fuel for 1 psi boost?? Is that not how it should go??? I would think that 61 psi at 25# boost would be lean?? I'm confused?:bounce:

ps: I'm so confused I can't find the confused face so went with bounce face

With your chip and injectors you need 1:1. Everyone tunes different. Some tune with large PW and some with high PSI and low PW.

Your logic is correct. :D

Never posted anything about running them in tandom :boxing: Just stated he will have to remove old dead pump.

Never posted and my friend does not use a stock hat with the Weldon. :fuckkk:

Never posted anything about stock fuel lines. :boxing:

As far as lotion, he can rub on my ass:teehee: Remember, if the balls don't touch, IT'S NOT GAY !:beee:

You need to run them in tandom in the TTA's configuration...

Just making sure everyone knows it isn't quite as easy as you portray. It can be done though!

Well TTA 733 is back on the road, the fuel pump was not the problem it was wiring. A power wire broke. Just old I guess. Got that fixed and installed new O2 sensor. Now just waiting for gasket and PVC valve from rjc

Glad you got it figured out. Looking forward to seeing 733 again. Just worked on my car this weekend and still working on getting the permits to get my garage built sometime soon I hope. ugh!
