Headlight motor running....

I just noticed today that the drivers side headlight motor runs for several seconds after the assembly is fully up or fully down. Any idea where to start looking for the source of the problem?
 
Try it with the hood up. Watch the knob you can use to raise or lower the headlight manually. Does it spin the entire time the motor is running or does it stop spinning first?

Getting time for a rebuild.
The three pucks that work as a clutch turn to dust and need to be replaced.
When they finally go belly up, your headlight motor will continue to spin trying to close them and then it's time to unplug the motor(s) before it drains your battery.

Wow, that's a nice kit for $20 and it does both headlights. Much nicer than what I put in my cars with the Home Depot parts (cost about $1). I would buy it.

That is great. I needed to do mine as well. I was going to buy the replacement ones from Autozone or Advance. I think they are $60? a piece but come with a lifetime warranty. I'd rather keep the original ones and rebuild them though. I also see they have a rebuild for the hatch pull down. Now if only they had something for the antennae.

The nob keeps spinning while the motor runs.

Thanks for all of the great info, looks like I need to get one of those rebuild kits :)
 
The two screws that hold the motor to the gears snapped off while I was trying to do the rebuild. I did some calling around last night and I couldn't find any of the local auto part stores that could get the replacement part. I tried a screw puller and it broke off as well - those screws are cemented in! One place suggested Napa and I will try them in the morning. Any ideas?
 
I think that is pretty common unfortunatly ... give Lon @ topdownsolutions.com a call and I'm sure he can advice and get any missing parts for you, he's very helpful and got tons of experience with the headlight motors.

I got a spare set for mine I need to rebuild one of these days, got the rebuild kits from Lon just not had time to get started on it yet ...
 
I just rebuilt my motors today. got the kit from Top down solutions. Nicekit. he even includes extra bolts for the left motor. My original screwsbrokeaswel. just drilled them out and replaced them with the included bolts. works great, except now my headlights don't go back down. I don't know if they did before either since they havenot worked since i boughtthe car. is this controlled by the headlight door module?
 
IIRC Up is the module down is he headlught switch. Last time I had trouble I was able to clean the contacts in the head light switch. Check the wiring diagram in the manual, if you still have questions, post up and I'll look at the manual.
 
Check the switch. If you squeeze the switch housing and they go down its bad. They are known for not making contact. GM has the switch, but when it comes in it will be black and not the correct gray. I think Hawks and some of the other F-body stores have the correct unit. Around 40 bones.
