I was doing a search for the new ZR-1, and wow there are alot of vette forums, with huge number of posts and many members. Makes me realize that the 89 TTA is definately a specialized car. What other forums do you all look at? I look at Supra, SRT-4, Viper, buick GN turbo forums of course,
computer technical help forums, some rock band stuff. I even found a forum on record setting pumpkin growers, they get into it! 1500 lbs pumpkin!. Bored....:read:

I go to ponchopride and the A-body site since being a former Can am owner I have lots of old friends there and of course Performance Years website.

I read drudge alot too and some other news link websites.
I have a story about competitive pumpkin growing too, but that's for later.

Steppin' out for Chinese right now!

I go to ls1.com, ls1tech.com, turbobuick.com, racingjunk.com...........and of course turbotransam.com :D

Got any pics of your Can Am, I've just started noticing those in Pontiac magazines. Are they based on the 442 body? They look like it, pretty cool.

Absolutely! Bought mine in 1999 finished it in about 18 months, then converted it to a "one of none" 4 speed. Showed it at the Pontiac nationals this year and took 3rd in my division...sold it 2 months later:disgust: .

1977 Can ams are based on the Lemans sport coupe body, shipped to motortown(which was the PAS of the Can am conversion) where they added the shaker hood, spoiler, graphics. There were 1377 of them produced of which most were W72 powered 400s and the rest being high altitude/California designated 403 Olds powered. All were the same in color but could be had with different interior colors and seat combinations.Jim wangers owned motortown conversion and was just about soley responsible for the Can ams inception.(He is signing my visor in one of the pictures) They were basically Lemans body,Trans am drivetrain,Grand prix interior.

While at the nationals Tom DeMauro of HPP did a photo shoot for all the Can am owners and I suspect it'll be in an upcoming issue.

Nice Can Am shots! Can Am's always had a spot in my heart. A 77 Lemans was my first car at 16 :) My neighbor bought a Can Am new in 77. He ran up about 70K on it. He daily drove it for some years and did some mods to it. He did a frame off about 8 years ago and put it back to stock. He died of a massive heart attack out of no where about 4 years ago. He had no will and the state came in and took everything. The put huge paddle locks on all the doors and 2 on the garage doors. His X wife and 2 sons tried to get the Can Am. I wanted to buy it off him if he ever sold it but always knew his boys would have first shot at it. I think he wanted me to have it because he knows how nice I keep my cars. The crazy part is he was away when he had the heart attack on vacation out of the country. Just before he left he had a Z24 I was selling for him to a friend of mine. He was going to give me the keys to his house so I could get the title and keys to the car if I sold it while he was away. He left me the wrong set of house keys and I called him and told him I'd get them off him when he came back. My friend who wanted the Z24 could wait. Well if he would have gave me the right keys I could have taken the car out and tucked it away for his kids to take if they wanted it! Instead the state hauled it away on a tow truck. The tow truck driver had a hard time getting it out of the driveway and drug the entire side of the car down a fence and tore the side of the car up from front to back! Was a shame to see it go. He has lived 2 doors away for 12 years and we became good friends. He loved my GN. I still think someday a Can Am might find it's way into my garage :) I didn't know they made a manual! That's awesome!

They didn't...I made it from parts collected over a couple years from the 73-74 Grand am line. All Can ams came with the TH400. But No expense was spared, nor a detail overlooked in doing the conversion. It is correct as though Pontiac built a 4 speed Can am right down to the reverse lockout and backdrive linkage.

It was, and still is a controversial swap, and a few people at Norwalk were very agitated that I placed with a 4 speed in it. But those were the owners who didn't place.

By the way...it now lives in Philadelphia and is owned by a Don White who owns a body shop and is RAIV GTO collector. So you may see it someday this summer.

Thanks for the compliments too. I miss that car, but the offer was too sweet to not sell it. Besides it allowed me to but the TTA with $ to spare.

Nope, we(Can am owners) got private track time to run our cars at Norwalk, but I chickened out. I'm very inexperienced at drag racing in general and it's been since 1982 since I've been down a track( in a shoddy TR7. the shape of things to come!...remember that?) and I figured I'd embarass myself or pop that open carrier 10 bolt.

The engine was relatively fresh at 30 over,RAIII cam and the usual goodies. So if I had to guess it would have marched down in the low 14s or high 13's. Pokey slow compared to TTAs but Can ams tip the scales at 4400lbs with driver and gas. That's moving some iron...

A few more Norwalk pictures,I'm second row from the left in the diamond pattern shot and that's me and my daughter posing in front of the car. the other is on the trailer moments before the ride home.

Oh, here's another car I should have kept, a 60K mile 2+2 aerocoupe. This is the car that truly needed a V6 turbo from the factory!!!

lol damn I didn't know that was Don Whites car! I know him. Next time I'm over there I'll take some pictures of me with the car!
I was going to say I don't think they ever made a manual but I don't know that much about to Can Am's to hang it out there. I like it! It sure does look like the factory put it in there! I like stuff like that as long as it looks like factory did it. Something different! :) I also like the rims you have on it. How many rim options were there? My buddy's car had the typical Ponitac rims with the center cap and trim ring.

Here is another story on my neighbors Can Am that will make you sick. From the day he brought it home from the dealer in 77 he was collecting NOS parts for that car. Had fenders, doors, bumpers, all the trim pieces, several complete front ends, all the interior stuff, and just boxes and boxes of nos in the box parts for that car. The x wife didn't think all that stuff was worth much so she threw it all away!!! I was away on vacation that week and I was pissed. I could have moved all the trash she put on the curb right into my garage! She told me about it later when I asked her because I remember him talking about all the spare nos parts he had collected. I think he had about 5 or 6 nos in the box stripe kits for the car. Some of the stuff that poor guy collected for that car all flushed away.

Lets all learn from your friends mistake (not having a will) and make sure our cars are passed on. Its sad to see someones collection just being trashed.

So true...I update our wills every two years to reflect changes in assets. I have riders attached that lay out what I want done with my guns and cars, etc. and I specifically name the people whom I wish to handle the settlements of those and other assets.

Small world you knowing Don and all, I only met him briefly at Norwalk and did the transaction over the phone. His friend Dan came to pick up the car. Dan was a great guy too.

Those wheels are the 7" snowflakes and were an option on just about every line of car from 77,78. Then there were 2 more styles of snowflakes made from 78-81, another 7" and the WS6 8" snowflake. Only the early 7" could be ordered on the Can am and had the different center cap badge than the Trans am.
The default wheel for the Can am would have been the 15" rally II's done in white and argent and that's what my Can am had been wearing when I bought it.But I always wanted snowflakes on it, they just look better to me. Those wheels cost $870 to have refinished believe it or not! But worth every penny too! They add "pop" to the car.

You should drive that car if you get a chance. One of the sweetest rides from the seventies. Big car feel with handling to boot. I swapped the lazy steering box out for a Monte Carlo SS 700 series box and it went from forever steer to a crisp 2.2 lock to lock turning. You'll also notice added a Formula steering wheel. That gave it a Trans am feel too.

Now I'm really starting to miss that car:cry:

I'm watching Powerblock right now, and they are showing/doing the 1977 Can Am!
I always loved that car, as well as the '86 aero coupe GP.
Someday I hope to get one of each.
I love that tranny swap!
